Today (3 June 2024) marks the commencement of the university selection application procedure, announced by Prof. Sampath Amartunge, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Prospective students can now download UGC Handbook and the application forms from the official UGC website, https://ugc.ac.lk/.
Due to the ongoing University Non-Academic Strike, printed application books will not be available for purchase in bookshops this year. Therefore, all applicants need to download and submit their applications online.
The application window is open from June 14th to July 5th, 2024. This provides three weeks for students to complete and submit their applications for university courses.
Prof. Amartunga also mentioned that the UGC has allotted an additional three weeks, from July 5th to July 19th, 2024, for students to reconsider and change their selected courses if needed. He emphasized the importance of making a wise and informed decision, as this choice will significantly impact their future careers.

During the press conference, Prof. Amartunga highlighted the number of students admitted to universities this year. Approximately 45,000 students will be admitted to 11 universities across Sri Lanka under the Free Education System, based on the Z scores from the 2023 A-Level results.
When asked by the media about the cutoff scores for courses, Prof. Amartunga explained that the exact cutoff marks cannot be predicted at this time. The cutoffs will be determined after students have applied to various universities, and only then will the UGC announce the minimum cutoff marks for each degree program.
In an exciting development, a new course has been introduced this year: the B.Sc. in Polymer Science and Industrial Management, offered by the University of Sri Jayewardenpuera.
