If you have 3 A/L passes at any stream then you can apply for Bachelor of Software Engineering Honours (BSEHons) degree offered by Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) and University Grants Commission (UGC). You can get a government-sponsored zero-interest loan facility to follow this course. UGC also will provide a loan scheme to purchase laptop computer for your online studies.
The Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) intends to achieve a targeted US$ 5bn export revenue from the software industry by 2025. The industry estimates to reach this target, an additional 200,000 IT qualified personnel would be required.
A recent survey identified that the Sri Lankan IT industry requires more than 12,000 additional graduates a year. Hence UCG has launched this program with OUSL in collaboration with Sri Lanka Association for Software Services Companies (SLASSCOM).
This programme explores the design, construction and implementation of large, complex software systems, which meet information processing challenges, subject to constraints such as cost, time and risk management. Students should complete core units in computer science, programming, software engineering, mathematics and Quality Assurance and Testing. Special attention is given to making students proficient in communication skills.
The OUSL will use a technology-supported distance delivery model to deliver the programme. A Learner Management System (LMS), will be used to manage the learner activities and provide access to materials. Tutorial support will be provided through discussion forums and other facilities available in the LMS.
The study programme will be delivered through all 28 regional centres of the OUSL located in Anuradhapura, Badulla, Batticaloa, Colombo, Jaffna, Kandy, Kurunegala, Matara and Ratnapura, and study centres in Ambalangoda, Ambalantota, Ampara, Bandarawela, Galle, Gampaha, Hatton, Kalutara, Kegalle, Kilinochchi, Kuliyapitiya, Mannar, Matale, Monaragala, Mullaitivu, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Trincomalee, Vavuniya. Students will be able to access computer laboratories with high-speed internet connectivity at these centres.
The OUSL has also signed an agreement with COURSERA , a platform for providing Massive Open Online Courses. Through this agreement students of the you will have access to over 4,300 courses and 750 guided projects offered by leading universities of the world such as Imperial College, London, and the US universities: John Hopkins, Duke, Pennsylvania, etc., and organizations such as IBM, GOOGLE, AMAZON etc without any additional payment. Based on the internationally recognized credit-transferable certificates obtained by the students, from these institutes, the OUSL will grant appropriate credits to its programme.
