The National Institute of Education (NIE) has published two versions of biology resource books:
- 1.2018-2019 edition (old)
- 2. 2020 new edition (new) – published as printed books
While both versions were valid for studies until 2023, from 2024 onwards, only the 2020 new edition should be used for A/L studies as per a circular issued by the Ministry of Education on 04.08.2022.
How to identify and get the new edition?
Getting the New Edition
- Download the 2020 new edition from the NIE website (https://nie.lk/showom) or our studentlanka.com website.
- Purchase copies from the NIE office in Maharagama or reputable bookstores.

Book covers – The new edition has updated book covers.
Contents –
Beware that different teachers may publish their versions. Some sellers may also distribute different versions.
Key differences:
Copyright page: Old edition says “First edition 2019.” The new edition says “First edition 2020.”
Page 74: The new edition contains the unique text “Students are expected only to name the Geological eons and eras of evolution. The content given in Resource book under Geological eons and eras of evolution is for extra knowledge” (ශිෂ්යයන් විසින් කල්ප හා යුග නම් කිරීම පමණක් …) which is not found in the old edition.
Please ensure you are studying the 2020 new edition biology resource book for your A/L exams starting 2024, as per the Ministry of Education guidelines. Let me know if you need any clarification on identifying the new book edition.
