University admissions 2016 based on 2015 A/L results

Students who passed the Advanced Level Examinations held in August 2015 can apply for University admissions for next (2015/ 2016) Academic Year from 24 th April.

UGC Chairman Prof. Mohan de Silva said, the University Grants Commission (UGC) will issue applications and the student hand book for recruiting new undergraduates for the next academic year on that day.


UGC selects students for admission to undergraduate courses for 15 universities and 18 higher educational institutions, which have been set up under the Universities Act.

Cut off District Z-Scores for each Course of Study

Cut off Z-Scores for University Admissions for Academic Year 2015 /2016 based on 2015 A/L examination has not been released yet. However you can get an idea of the Z-score required for each score by observing last year Z-Scores.

Minimum Z-Scores for selection to various courses of study in respect of each district for University Admission – Academic Year 2014 /2015, based on the GCE (A/L) Examination in 2014.

University Selection based on Merit and District basis

Selection of students to Courses of Study in Physical Science, Bio Science, Commerce, Engineering Technology & Biosystems Technology is based on 40% all island Merit, 55% district merit and 5% as an additional placement for students in 16 educationally disadvantaged’ districts.

However, selection of students to Courses of Study in Arts Stream is done mainly on the all Island Merit basis.

University intake increased by 10% this year

Intake of students for the new academic year will be increased by 10%, according to University Grants Commission (UGC).

UGC Chairman Prof. Mohan de Silva said, 27,603 students will be enrolled for various undergraduate courses conducted at 15 universities and 18 higher educational institutions for the new 2015- 2016 academic year.

“Last year the figure was 25,200 and therefore this is an increase of 10%,” he said.
