Sri Lanka Medical Council Published a press Advertisment warning propsective students on misleading advertismens (Advetorials!) by local and foreign medical schools which are not recognized by Sri Lanka Medical Council. SLMC issued this advertisment amidst the controversoy on the issue of the Malable Private Medical college (SAITM).
Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) also said thay they will not teach medical students of unapproved medical colleges such as the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) who come to State hospitals for clinical training.
The press release of SLMC reads:
The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) decided to focus the attention on the public on certain misleading advertisements (advertorials!) in the local media (print/electronic) pertaining to the recruitment of students to local and foreign medical schools. Such advertisements are calculated to induce students to join institutions which are NOT RECOGNIZED BY THE SLMC. They also entice students who DO NOT FULFIL the Mandatory Entry criteria specified by the SLMC to enter Medial/ Dental Courses.
In this context the SLMC hereby definitively instructs prospective Medical/dental students seeking admission to medical/dental schools to verify the following from the Register of the SLMC:
1. Whether the medical/dental school awarding the relevant degree is recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Council
2. Whether they possess the mandatory entry qualifications stipulated by the Sri Lanka Medical Council to follow a study course in Medicine/ dentistry.
For this purpose they must submit to the SLMC the original certificate of the GCE A/L to the Registrar of the SLMC and obtain an Eligibility certificate before commencing their studies.
BE INFORMED THAT IT IS A PUNISHABLE OFFENSE FOR TO PRACTISE MEDICINE, SURGERY OR DENTISERY WITHOUT VAUD SLMC REGISTRATION.
