Internet broadband data plans in Sri Lanka

Broadband is a form high-capacity transmission technique using a wide range of frequencies that allows higher data transfer rates. Broadband transfers data at least 10 times faster than standard dial-up. Broadband is an umbrella term that covers all types of internet connections: cable, satellite, DSL (eg ADSL), and fiber optic services.


Mobile and Internet service providers in Sri Lanka offer Broadband plans based on free data bundles (data provided per day, week or month). Sri Lanka has six internet service providers: Sri Lanka Telecom, Dialog, Mobitel, Etiselat, Airtel and Hutch. Now these Internet Service Providers offer Home broadband, Mobile broadband.

Internet Service Providers ISPs in Sri Lanka

To get data connection such as broadband connection you need an ISP. According to Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka TRCSL, there are nine ISPs in Sri Lanka.

• Type of package – Pre Paid or Post Paid
• Price for free data bundle
• Charging Frequency – Per month, week or daily
• Excess usage charge
• Additional services – voice calls, SMS and MMS
• Speed of connection

Internet Broadband data speeds in Sri Lanka

Telecom companies specify internet speed as upto 3.6 MBPS. Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) announced recently that fixed broadband service providers in Sri Lanka have been providing download speeds far below advertised rates at peak times. You can test your internet speed by visiting TRC web site

When we tested our Dialog Broadband connection in Maharagama in April 2017 we got this result.

Internet speed test can also be carried out at http://testmy.net/country/lk# website also. According to this site
Average Download Speed in Sri Lanka : 7.6 Mbps (944 kB/s)
Average Upload Speed in Sri Lanka : 606 Kbps (76 kB/s)
According to this test Upload Speed of my Dialog broadband connection in April 2017 is 3.9 Mbps 486 kB/s
