Marine and aerospace are two respected fields that you can get good employment and earn well. Though people dream to work in these fields the chances are very rare. In Sri Lanka there is a lack of schools for these two fields. With the prevailing situation most of young people are looking forward to join these fields.
CINEC Maritime Campus
In this campus marine courses are mainly divided in to two. They are Department of Navigation and Department of Marine Electronics & Radio Communications Engineering.
In the CINEC they have 38 moths degree for navigation. This includes with 14 months training at CINEC and 24 months training on board ships. This course costs US $ 15330 for whole 38 months. The entry requirements are little bit strict than other degrees. Cadets are selected on the following basic qualifications for this course. The cadets should be under 21 years of age. They should have successfully completed the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level Examination, with a minimum of five Credit passes including Mathematics, Science and English Language. They should have a minimum of 3 passes in the Science Stream at GCE Advanced Level Examination out of following subject physics, Chemistry, Combined Mathematics and Biology or Pass Combined MATHEMATICS AND Physics in GCE (A/L) Examination.
Under the Department of Marine Electronics & Radio Communications Engineering there are many courses. Mainly there is Marine Electrical Engineer Training course. This course is conducted annually and the commencement is on March. This course is a full time 16 months course included with 12 months theory and practical and 4 months on the job training. To begin this course for someone they should have the minimum requirements of G. C. E. (Ordinary Level) Credit Passes for Mathematics, Science & English (Compulsory) and G. C. E. (Advanced Level) Mathematic Stream – 2 passes (Combined Mathematics & Physics) or Science Stream – 3 passes. Medical fitness report is needed with eye check – Vision to 6/6 without glasses. And also the age limit is under 25 years or less. There are many courses similar to this and some of them are combined to this course.
Marine Engineering Institute of Engineering Technology
This institution is certified by ISO 9001 and 2000 for their performance. For this marine engineering course the institute is asking passes for 6 subjects in G.C.E (O/L) examination in one sitting including a minimum of 3 credits and passes for Combined Mathematics, physics and Chemistry in G.C.E (A/L) examination in one sitting. The cadet should be age between 18 and 25 years. The course duration is about 4 and half years
Asian Aviation Centre (Pvt) Ltd.
This is situated inside the Rathmalana airport. This institute conducts Engineering and Technology courses and Flying Training as well.
Under Engineering and Technology they have BEng.(Hons) in Aerospace/Mechanical/Automotive Engineering Design course. This is three years full time course which requires A/L’s including Mathematics + Physics or equivalent. They offer another course in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. For this course they ask for G.C.E. O/L with 6 passes including Credits in Mathematics, Science and English as entry requirements. The duration of the course is four years with two years practical.
There are many courses similar to these two. The requirements they ask for is same as these two courses I’ve mentioned earlier. Some of them are Higher National Diploma in Engineering (Aerospace/Mechanical/ Automotive), Foundation Degree in Aircraft Engineering and Certificate IV in Aviation Engineering, Aircraft Maintenance. Engineer (Mechanical: Maintenance).
Under Flying Training they got Private Pilot Licence [PPL], Commercial Pilot Licence [CPL], Commercial Pilot Licence with Instrument Rating [CPL/IR], Instrument Rating [IR] and Assistant Flight Instructor Rating (AFIR). Entry Qualifications are G.C.E. O/L with 6 passes including Credits in Mathematics, Science and English or Equivalent. Final selection will be based on Medical Examination approved by the Civil Aviation Authority.
Skyline Aviation (Pvt) Ltd.

They provide Private Pilot License (PPL) in six month full time course. They also conduct courses for Commercial pilot license (CPL/IR), Airline Transport Pilot License (APTL Frozen) and Flight Instructor 3 month course. Those who are interested in aircraft engineering this institute conduct Aircraft Maintenance License (AML). This is a two years full time course.
Sri Lankan Airlines

End of this two years course the students are awarded by an international certificates awarded by IATA/Montréal, Canada. To start this course at Sri Lankan they are looking for a minimum requirement of having two credits for any subject in science stream. This course cost around 1o lakhs.
There are some other institutes conducts these type of marine and aerospace degrees. The institutes mentioned above are the popular among all those institutes. You should be able to choose the course and the place to start your studies according to your future plans and the cost you can afford. I hope this will be helpful for you to get an idea.
