Cost of Private degree courses vary as can be seen for the cost of various IT degrees. Higher Education Minister Hon S.B. Dissanayake told Parliament yesterday (6 July 2010) that cost per student in each undergraduate degree course of study was Rs 555,653 for Dental Science, Rs 463,476 for veterinary science, Rs 286,592 for medicine, Rs 263,321 for agriculture, Rs 180,845 for science, Rs 173,704 for engineering, Rs 123,813 for architecture, Rs 111,893 for education, Rs 109,135 for Business studies and Rs 57,767 for law per student of the Buddhashravaka Bhiksu University and Rs 241,517 per student of Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.
He also said that there are around 73 private educational institutes offering degree courses in the country. The Minister said there are eight institutes which have been recognized under Section 25 A of the University Act to amend some selected degree programs.
Comparing these costs, it seems that cost of degrees offered by private degree awarding institutes are higher compared to actual cost per student of state universities. According to the web sites of those institutes, approximate tuition fees claimed to be charged by different institutes are about Rs 448,000 for BSc in Information Technology (BIT) of SLIIT, Rs 480,000 for BSc in Management Information Systems degree of NIBM (conducted in collaboration with University College, Dublin), Rs 380,000 for UGC approved BSc degree in Management Information Systems – Special Degree at NIBM. Private institutes who affiliate with foreign universities charge much higher prices.
Please add your comments on the approximate cost of different private degrees in Sri Lnaka.
