    Summary of the presentation made at the Seminar organized by Institue of Biology and Young Biologists Association, Sri Lanka on 23 April 2007 at Auditorium of the National Museum, Colombo 7.

    Passing G.C.E. (A. L.) Examination is essential for Higher education. Probability of passing G.C.E. (A.L) Examination is higher among Biological Science students than among Physical Science students.

    Both Biological science and Physical Science students can follow following courses:

    • Information Technology (M) 100
    • Management & IT (K) 50
    • Textile & Clothing Design (M) 40
    • Town and Country Planning (M) 50
    • Information and Communication Tech. (C,Rj,Jf) 205
    • Science &Technology (U) 45
    • Computer Science and Technology (U) 45
    • Entrepreneurship & Management (U) 35

    TOTAL 955

    If 50% of these places are filled by Biological Science students, a total of 478 will get admitted. Then the total number of those who did Biology that will get admitted is 4252 + 478 = 4730
    The Open University

    If you are not selected to a conventional University, then you can enroll at the Open University of Sri Lanka to follow the B.Sc. Degree.
    Subjects offered: Botany, Zoology and Chemistry. Even you can follow a B.Sc. Special degree course.

    Admission requirements for Open University courses are 3 passes in G.C.E. A/L examination. However, if you havent got 3 passes, then you can follow the Foundation Level Courses and get admitted to the B.Sc. Degree programme.

    • Forestry
    • Environmental Science
    • Food Science
    • Aquaculture
    • Natural Resources

    Even in the traditional subjects such as Botany and Zoology, the syllabi are now changed to suit the present day demands.

    • Environmental Science
    • Fisheries Biology
    • Entomology
    • Nematology
    • Aquaculture
    • Genetics

    Subjects that are offered under the subject of Botany

    • Horticulture
    • Tissue Culture
    • Export agriculture
    • Silviculture
    • Plant Biotechnology

    The course modules that can be offered by Biological Science students in addition to main subjects

    • Management
    • Computer Studies
    • Personality development
    • Communication skills development
    • English

      Hello Sir/Madam,
      I’m doing my G.C.E A/L right now, not the National Syllabus but Cambridge. I don’t know if the OUSL accepts my results,
      IF NOT where else can I pursue what I want to in Sri lanka. I’m interested in Biotechnology & Chemistry mainly.
      Please advice

      Sir,I got 3C passes from biology science stream. I faced a/l in Kurunegala district. My z.score is 0.6129 and district rank is 970.
      will I be able to apply for a university course?

        You can follow Bio Medial Science, as B M Engineering is an Engineering subject.
