Minimum Z score values for Biological Science degree programs – analysis of 2022 A/L data

Biological Science students can apply for various courses (Medicine, Health Sciences, Biological Science, Applied Science, Food Science and Technology, Molecular Biology etc.). Out of these, only biological science courses are analyzed here.

Biological Science degree courses are available in eight universities in Sri Lanka.

  2. University of Peradeniya
  3. University of Sri Jayewardenepura
  4. University of Kelaniya
  5. University of Jaffna
  6. University of Ruhuna
  7. Eastern University, Sri Lanka
  8. South Eastern University of Sri Lanka

We analyzed 2022 A/L Z score minimum values for university selection in Sri Lanka for Biological Science courses, with rows representing districts and columns representing different universities.

  • University of Colombo: Highest in Gampaha (1.6014)
  • University of Peradeniya: Highest in Matale (1.5053)
  • University of Sri Jayewardenepura: Highest in Matale (1.3551)
  • University of Kelaniya: Highest in Matale (1.2876)
  • University of Jaffna: Highest in Kalutara (1.1666)
  • University of Ruhuna: Highest in Kalutara (1.1478)
  • Eastern University, Sri Lanka: Highest in Colombo (0.9949)
  • South Eastern University of Sri Lanka: Highest in Colombo (0.9968)

Lowest Z Scores

  • University of Colombo: Lowest in Matale (NQC, Not Qualified for Consideration)
  • University of Peradeniya: Lowest in Colombo (1.4293)
  • University of Sri Jayewardenepura: Lowest in Colombo and Kalutara (1.3093)
  • University of Kelaniya: Lowest in Kalutara (1.2257)
  • University of Jaffna: Lowest in Gampaha (0.8881)
  • University of Ruhuna: Lowest in Colombo (1.0732)
  • Eastern University, Sri Lanka: Lowest in Gampaha (0.7536)
  • South Eastern University of Sri Lanka: Lowest in Gampaha (0.5734)

Notable Observations

  • Some entries have the value NQC (Not Qualified for Consideration) indicating that students from those districts did not meet the minimum qualifications for that particular university.
  • The University of Colombo and the University of Peradeniya have some of the highest Z scores, indicating a higher level of competition or a higher threshold for entry.
  • The South Eastern University of Sri Lanka has the lowest Z scores overall, especially notable in Gampaha (0.5734), indicating a lower threshold for entry.

Conclusion

The data shows a significant variation in Z scores across different universities and districts, reflecting the competitive nature and varying levels of accessibility for Biological Science courses in Sri Lankan universities.
