In Sri Lanka, except for the Arts stream, 60% of selection to all other degree programs are on District Basis,
According to the University Grants Commission (UGC) in Sri Lanka, the basis for deciding the district of a candidate for university admission is the school that the candidate was enrolled in for at least one year or more during a period of three years when they were studying advanced-level (A/L).
This three-year period is calculated backward from the last date of the month immediately preceding the month in which the advanced level (A/L)l examination is held. If a candidate has been enrolled in more than one school during this period, the district of the school where the candidate studied for the most number of days (as long as this period was at least one year or more) is considered as the district for university admission.
If a candidate has not enrolled in any school or their schooling period for the GCE Advanced Level Examination is less than one year, the district of their permanent residence is considered as the district for university admission. Candidates must provide documentary evidence to prove their permanent residence.
