Biological Science University degree Programs – How to select courses?

Following degree programs are available for GCE A/L Biological Science students at the National Universities. You can apply these courses if you do Biology, Chemistry and Physics for A/L. Many Biology and Agriculture courses, you can do Agriculture instead of Physics. However to select Medicine, Dental, Veterinary, Health Science Ayurveda and some other programs you need Physics as a subject.

Following courses are available (Ranked roughly according to Z-Scores of 2019 A/L or popularity)

1 – Medicine (5 years) Z 2.22

This the most popular degree program in the entire university system in Sri Lanka, because it still secures a prestigious job as a Doctor in Government Health Ministry.

There are eleven Medical Faculties in Sri Lanka which takes more than 1590 medical students.

2. Dental and Veterinary

This course offered by the University of Colombo is not a Dental or Vet degree, however due to its high Z-Score, we include it here instead of under other Bio Science degrees. In fact many Science Faculties in all universities teach Molecular Biology and Genetics, however from the inception of this course this has become very popular option among Biology students.

3 – Health Science Degree Programs 

The health sector is vast, so if you cannot become a Doctor then you can follow these Allied Health courses and join the Health sector.

These courses train healthcare professions in pharmacy, laboratory technical staff, nursing, radiography and physiotherapy. They provide a range of diagnostic, technical, therapeutic, and support services in connection with health care.

4 – Biological Science BSc General and Special (Or Honours) Degrees

B.Sc. in Biological Science– 3 or 4 years Z 1.66-1.41

These degrees have three subject combinations. Subjects offered for these degrees include -Biology, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Forestry and Environmental Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Aquatic Science, Food Science, Management Science, Pharmacy, Immunology, Bio-informatics, ICT and Horticulture etc. Please refer to UCG handbook to check the subject combinations or visit the websites of the science faculties of these Universities.

These degrees are three-year General degrees or four-year degrees. Some universities named these four-year degrees as Special degrees and some named them as Hounours degrees.

 5. B.Sc. in Agricultural Technology & Management (4 years) Z 1.52

This course if offered by the University of Peradeniya. This course and Agriculture degrees offered by other Universities cover broad subject areas: Agricultural Biology, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Economics, and Business Management, Animal Science, Crop Science, Food Science and Technology, and Soil Science.

6. Food Science

Recently Food science has become popular among Biology students as it is connected with jobs in the food industry. The degree offered by Jayewardnepura University is more in Chemistry based, while the Peradeniya degree is in Agriculture based and the Wayamba degree has a component in Nutrition.
