How to attain Nirvana or Arhat – Bhikkhus re-discovered Lord Buddha’s teaching

June 16, 2019 By Hiran

Buddhism provides a plan to end suffering and attaining Nibbana (Nirvana).

Two divisions of Buddhism is being practiced globally, they are Mahayana and Theravada. Theravada Buddhism  is practiced in Sri Lanka. Theravada tradition traces its roots to the words of the Buddha preserved in the Pali Canon called Tripiṭaka or Tipiṭaka, and considers itself to be the more orthodox form of Buddhism.  The Tripitaka is a record of the words of the Buddha.

In Sri Lanka, Buddhist philosophy  is mixed with Hinduism and practiced with mixed mindsets. But there are many who have got out of this trend and start learning true Buddhist philosophy by reading Tripitaka and stated practicing pure Theravada Buddhism in view of attaining Nibbana (Nirvana).

Sri Lankan Bhikkhus who teaches true Buddhism

Many bhikkhus in Sri Lana have studied Tripitaka and understood and comprehend true Buddhism. It has been believed that they may have attained Arhat state. Arhat (Pali arahant) in Buddhism, is a perfected person, one who has gained insight into the true nature of existence and has achieved nirvana (spiritual enlightenment). The state of an arhath is considered in the Theravada tradition to be the proper goal of a Buddhist.

There are four progressive stages culminating in full enlightenment as an Arahant  enlightenment in Theravada and Early Buddhism. These four stages are Sotāpanna (Sovan), Sakadāgāmi (Sakurdagami), Anāgāmi, and Arahant.

Following are some of those bhikkhus who are believed to comprehended path to Nirvana, or who has already attained Arhat state.

    Siri Samanthabhadra Maha Arahath Thero

Siri Samathabhadra Maha Thera who resides in Siri Sadaham Ashramaya, bellantara, Dehiwala  is a microbiology graduate. He followed Theravada Buddhism as a monk named Ven. Pitiduwe Siridhamma for more than ten years. He realized that at traditional temples, the Buddhist philosophy was not practiced.

Later he changed his name as Ven Siri Samathabhadra Thera  in keeping with his philosophical advancement of Arahant state. He is a sociable, scholarly venerable monk, who attempts to ensure the revival of Buddhist philosophy.

According to SIRI PATHIRANA, a member of the executive committee of Sirisadaham Ashramaya the  sermons delivered by Samathabhadra Arahat Maha Thero, the devotees are persuaded to have: a) Enjoyment (Aasvadaya) b) Remification (Aadinaya) c) Emancipation (Nissaranaya). In fact, this is what happened to Prince Siddhartha. Therefore , our Arahath Maha Thera persuades the devotees to attain stream entry (sovan). That is, let go your craving and develop loving kindness, without any attachment.
