Accredited Engineering Degrees in Sri Lanka

Engineering is the application of scientific knowledge to solving problems in the real world. While science (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.) allows us to gain an understanding of the World and the Universe, Engineering enables this understanding to come to life through problem solving, designing and building things.

Engineering is a broad field that is divided into various disciplines and sub-disciplines. The disciplines of engineering can be divided into four main categories, chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.

What is accreditation of an Engineering Degree?

Accreditation when it comes to Engineering Degrees is simply a gold star or stamp that assures the structure and content of your degree meets Industry Recognized Standards.

Accreditation of your Engineering degree is very important, because if it is not accredited you may not be able to legally work as an Engineer, not only in Sri Lanka but in most countries in the World.

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) accredits four year and three year full time degree programmes conducted in Sri Lanka.

IESL is a signatory to the Washington Accord, an agreement between selected governing bodies around the World that provide engineering degree accreditation. Washington Accord provides assurance that your degree is then recognized by all other members in the Washington Accord. Therefore if a Sri Lankan Engineering gets IESL accreditation, then then it is also recognized by other countries such as UK, USA.
