Webometrics (www.webometrics.info) issued latest 2015 July World Ranking of Universities. According to this 2015 July rankings University of Colombo, Peradeniya, Moratuwa, Kelaniya and Sri Jayewardenepura became the best five Universities in Sri Lanka.
It is interesting to note that none of the Sri Lankan Universities are among the top 2000 universities in the world, highest ranked University in Sri Lanka is Colombo and it became the 2039 th University in the world.
Following Four Criteria are used in Ranking of Universities
| PRESENCE. | Total number of web pages, according to Google, excluding pdf files. | 10% |
| IMPACT (VISIBILITY). | Average number of inlinks according to two inlinks providers (ahrefs & Majestic. | 50% |
| OPENNESS. | Total number of pdf files according to Google. | 10% |
| EXCELLENCE. | Research papers published, according to Scimago data (top 10% most cited papers by discipline) for the five year period 2009-2013. | 30% |
