Informatics Olympiad is organised by the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) with the assistance of the Information & Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) and the Ministry of Education to select participants for IOI (International Olympiad in Informatics). The primary goal of the IOI is to stimulate interest in informatics (computing science) and information technology.
IOI 2010 was held in Canada in August 2010. Sri Lankan School children born after 1st July 1991 are eligible to participate IOI 2011.
National Informatics Olympiad Competition winners are recognised by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Medal winners at IOI are recognised by Infotel and the BCS Sri Lanka Section.
The competition tasks are of algorithmic nature; however, the contestants have to show such basic IT skills as problem analysis, design of algorithms and data structures, programming and testing. The winners of the IOI belong to the best young computer scientists in the world. Another important goal is to bring together exceptionally talented students from various countries and to have them share scientific and cultural experiences.
There are also other Olympiad competitions in Sri Lanka: Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Astronomy and Junior Science.
