“Every youth wants to be unique, that is, YOU! But the world all around you, is doing its best, to make you just everybody else”, said Dr Abdul Kalam, Former President of India and renowned aerospace engineer and professor of Aerospace engineering, at World Science day school program organized by National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka at BMICH Colombo on 24 January 2012. At home, students are asked by their parents to be like neighbors’ children for scoring good marks, and in school, teachers say “why not you become like the first five rankers in the class”. Wherever you go, they are saying you have to be somebody else or everybody else.
However you can also become a great scientist like Thomas Alva Edison (inventor of electric bulb and electrical lighting system), Wright Brothers (aero plane), Alexander Graham Bell (telephone) or Sir CV Raman (Nobel Prize winner for his discovery on scattering of light).

Your challenge is to fight until you arrive at your destined place, that is, a unique you!

Criteria to become a Unique Person (Scientist)

There are four steps that you can follow to become a unique person;
1. having an aim in life before 20 years of age,
2. acquiring knowledge continuously, by good books and from great personalities
3. hard work towards the aim and
4. perseverance to defeat the problem and succeed. That means you should never give up.

Write your answer according to the main action verb such as Name, State, Describe, Explain, Discuss etc.

Draw a diagram when explaining a structure.

Use specific words eg. External inter-coastal muscles

Do not write answers in point form.

Understand the question before attempting to answer it.

Do easy questions first.

Answer all questions.

Invented by Tony Buzan, Mind Map is a great technique which can be used for your education and planning short term or long term activities.

Mind Maps will help you to
Think clearly and creatively,
Remember lessons
Prepare short notes
Solve problems and make decisions
Plan activities
Manage and take control of your life

Using Mind Maps you can summarize larger pieces of information in a lesson (Unit) into a one page, where you will be able to see the whole- picture view of the subject area.

Follow the process below to prepare a Mind Map from your notes.
1. Read the section (Eg. Cellular Basis of Life) and understand the areas covered in the lesson.
2. Begin your Mind Map with a central image, representing the Subject area.
3. Draw major topics related to the subject.
4. Now add sub-topics to each area. There is no limit to the number of branches and sub branches that can radiate outwards. Use colours, symbols, or both.
5. Edit and re-order your Mind Map if necessary

Here we are including a Mind Map prepared for Chemical and Cellular Basis of Life lesson for Advanced Level Biology.

The graph shown here is called “The Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve”. It indicates the rate at which human beings forget new information. As you can see, we forget almost 70% of what we learn within 24 hours. Even in the first 1 hour, you’ll forget more than half of what you’ve learned.

Solution to this problem of forgetfulness, is regular revising and practice of the knowledge and skills over a period of time.

Here are some techniques to increase your memory.

1. Regular revision – Recall what you have learned on a regular basis. The hour/day/week/month model is one. Ebbinghaus Studies also found that a stable long-term memory is established only after an average of 7 repetitions. That means you need to review a same lesson several times before you can effectively retain it in memory.

Let’s say on day 1 you learned a lesson. They should be reviewed once to twice again on the same day, once more on the second day, once more in a week, once more in two weeks, and again in a month. Research suggests that the spacing is different for individuals. Recent research has shown that rehearsal just prior to sleep is a powerful technique.

2. Take notes and prepare a short note – Write up the lesson, in your own words with diagrams, and prepare a summary or short note of the lesson. This can result in dramatic increases in learning (20-30%). Then re-read a few times afterwords.

3. Repetition – Before starting a new study session, repeat (not in parrot fashion) the what you’ve studied previously. Take five or ten minutes at the start to revise the previous content.

4. Practice – Do questions, past papers after the course. This prevents reliance on short-term memory and gives you a chance to develop long term knowledge and skills.

What is Procrastination? You procrastinate when you put off things that you should be focusing on right now, usually in favor of doing something that is more enjoyable or that you’re more comfortable doing.

Start with a quick 10 minute task
Start an easy task
Do the work and then take a reward

Mobile phone was introduced to Sri Lanka in early 1990’s and now it has penetrated almost all layers of the society. Mobile-phone manufacturers introduce novel mobile phone models with fantastic features. Before buying a phone please remember that you should not addict to this new found technology, use it wisely, else it may affect your studies.

As a student how can you choose a good model at an affordable price? Here are some tips to consider before you selecting a mobile phone.

Many mobile phones have FM radio facility. Television ability is also present in some Chinese phones.

The latest trend is Smart phones. These are phones with advanced capabilities that can function like a PC. They have features like e-mail, internet, e-book reading ability etc,. Blackberry is a popular Smartphone and Apple i-Phone is also popular. In Sri Lanka these phones are used by high professionals and businessmen.

Durability of the phone

Durability is an important factor in selecting a mobile phone. As a student you may be having a busy and restless lifestyle, where you may have to opt for a hardworking phone. Nokia mobile phones are said to be very durable and they are popular for excellent talking ability (audio quality). They can withstand shocks and adverse conditions. Sony Ericson phones usually consist of good camera known as Cybershot. Their music feature is also good compared to other mobile phones in the market. Motorola is also a durable phone brand. It’s a good idea if you can go for these durable brands even if they are second hand. Although Chinese phones are loaded with fantastic features they are said to be less durable. If by chance you drop the phone there will be serious problems such as losing of display etc,.

Tip no 1 – Positive Thinking

Tip no 2 – How to improve your memory
