Type Sinhala unicode fonts free with Google Transliteration

Now you can type sinhala fonts using Google Transliteration. Google Transliteration allows you to type phonetically using Roman characters. You can simply type a word the way it sounds in English and Google Transliteration will convert it to its local script.

Also you can download Google Transliteration IME, which allow you to run Sinhala fonts on Windows 7/ Vista/ XP 32-bit or 64-bit operating systems. Using this you can type Sinhala directly into note pad or Microsoft Word. You can also use this to compile your blog postings.

Other popular method for typing unicode fonts is to use Real Time Unicode SinGlish Transliterated Font Converter developed by University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC). UCSC also has Real Time Unicode Converter that convert other fonts such as DL-Manel-bold, kaputadotcom, FM Abhaya, Thibus Sinhala to Unicode, or Unicode fonts to other types.

NIE (National Institute of Education) published GCE Advanced Level Teacher’s Instructional Manuals (Teacher’s Guides) for year 13, and now you can download them from their web site. These are available in Sinhala, Tamil an English mediums. Earlier they published syllabuses for A/L examination. Sinhala Medium:

The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) operates based on the concept Open and Distance Learning (ODL). It caters to a wider population of people scattered over the country to pursue higher education at their choice. The university policy on admission would enable a person to register at the lowest ‘Level’ only with basic educational qualifications (eg: Foundation Courses) and then climb up to postgraduate level. Some of the courses even do not require GCE O/L as an entry requirement.

Open University was established by the government of Sri Lanka under the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978. The main purpose of establishing such a university is providing higher educational opportunities to working adults, ensuring their educational and professional qualifications. However later it became popular among students who wanted to obtain a degree from a National University.

The concept of Distance Education is facilitated via the network of Regional Centers, Study Centers and Teaching Centers throughout the country. The Headquarters is situated in Nawala, Nugegoda while regional centers are situated in Kandy, Matara, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa and Jaffna. There are 18 study centers in other districts and 6 teaching centers also.
The Open University of Sri Lanka operates under five faculties such as
• Faculty of Education
• Faculty of Engineering Technology
• Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
• Faculty of Natural Sciences
• Post Graduate Institute of English

Under each faculty they offer courses varying form basic courses such as Foundation courses to advanced courses such as Masters and PhD.

Faculty of Education was established on 01st February, 2003. It currently consists of three Departments: Department of Secondary & Tertiary Education, Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education and Department of Special Needs Education.

Faculty of Engineering Technology consists of six academic departments such as Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Textile and Apparel Technology, Agricultural and Plantation Engineering and Mathematics & Philosophy of Engineering. The faculty offers two major study programmes namely Technology (Engineering), and Industrial Studies in various specializations using Open and Distance Learning methodology.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest Faculty of the Open University of Sri Lanka not only in terms of student numbers but also in terms of the number of academic programs administered and the graduates produced. The four academic Departments, namely the Department of Language Studies, the Department of Legal Studies (Law), the Department of Management Studies and the Department of Social Studies have given the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences a multidisciplinary outlook. Department of Legal Studies offer Degree of Bachelor of Laws (LLB).

Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Open University was established in 1987. Today it has grown into the six Departments, Botany, Chemistry, Health Sciences, Math & Computer Science, Physics and Zoology.
To facilitate the Distance Learning concept the OUSL Library collection is available online through Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). The Library collection is accessible through the Campus Wide Information Network as well. The users can Search the full collection including books, course materials, journals, Audio-visuals, CD-ROMs etc., can check the availability books, can check your own borrowing status and reserving the books online. Also they offer students online Learning Management Systems (LMS) using Moodle and Virtual Classroom programs.

The study programs offered by Open University has really benefitted students who are not capable of enter a National University based on their Z-Score mark at A/L. However it’s said that examination results are released in a more systematic way and pass rates are lower at final stages of degree programs.

Online degrees in Sri Lanka

Now you can obtain a degree or diploma without attending a university or an institute. These are called as online degrees. Although this is a novel concept to Sri Lanka it’s a much popular option in other foreign countries. All you need to have is an internet-connected computer and required financing. Different types of qualifications are awarded through this method such as Diplomas, Bachelors and Masters Degrees.

Several Online degrees were initiated in Sri Lanka in 2003 under Distance Education Modernization Project (DEMP). DEMP is an initiative of the Ministry of Higher Education. The main objective of DEMP is facilitating the means to develop online distance learning (ODL) institutions and a means for delivering ODL throughout the country.

In Sri Lanka some state universities, professional associations, private and public sector education institutions offer number of online degrees. Out of them Universities of Colombo and Rajarata are pioneer online degree providers. They offer number of online Bachelors and Masters Degrees. You can choose an online course according to your preference. There are different subject areas offered by institutes such as Management, Marketing, Science, Engineering, IT and Cookery.

There are many advantages of online degree programmes. The main benefit is you can obtain a degree while you’re engage in other work such as employment. At the same time it will save your time and travelling cost. This has become a popular option in foreign countries as you can enroll for a course of an institute which is far from your home town. For example a student live in Galle can enroll for a course in Rajarata University. Financial assistance is also available to needy students under the Stipend Program. However there are some disadvantages of these online degrees. The main drawback is there will be less interaction between lecturers and students. Bill Gates on Online Learning, innovation, health and food

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation website recently published Bill Gates 2010 Annual Letter. He emphasizes on innovations in health, food, education and energy and how it can make the difference between a bleak future and a bright one. He argues that although there are online courses and lectures from leading universities are available on the web, so far technology has hardly changed formal education and he thinks that education would be the the next area where the Internet will surprise people in how it can improve things.

He has also just started a twitter account and already has over 300,000 followers. I just followed him with my twitter account.

Student Lanka launched “Student Lanka Learning Community“, a Social Learning Network for university students (undergraduates and post-graduates) and school children.

Educators can start courses, and students can read study materials, upload assignments and participate in social learning. This social media platform support formal social learning, informal social learning and collaborative working.

Users can also connect to the site using their facebook login (fconnect from the home page).
