Do you want to become a pharmacist? Pharmacists distribute prescription drugs to individuals. They also advise their patients, physicians, and other health practitioners on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications. Nowadays the world is more attentive about the pharmaceuticals, therefore it would be a lucrative business opportunity if you can start your own Pharmacy.

In Sri Lanka there are four major types of pharmacists
• Community pharmacists
• Hospital pharmacists/ government pharmacist
• Pharmacists for special forces
• University B.Pharm degree holders

// ]]>

Community pharmacists – start your own pharmacy:
Most private sector pharmacists found in Sri Lanka are generally produced by the private institutions around the country. One who possesses a good apprentice with two years of professional experience under the supervision of any medical council approved community pharmacist may earn the privilege to acquire the registration of the Sri Lanka Medical Council to practice as a pharmacist. Then he should follow a course work of pharmacology through any recognized institute (see details below for such institutions) which is oriented to the National Medical Council placement examination. After receiving the charter form the Medical council then you can start your own pharmacy and follow on.

Hospital pharmacists are the direct government servants who have the institutional bond with the government health sector. Applying according to the government gazette you can enter the pharmacology field by selecting to the short listed pharmacists to be trained in fulfilling the local health service needs. Two years of academic education followed by a one year practical experience will be given to such students and they will be recruited to the government hospitals and other affiliations. Pharmaceutical chemistry, forensic pharmacology, pharmacognocy are some of the subfields that these students might learn, where they will obtain an in grain practice in the field. However these government servants are strictly prohibited in practicing as community pharmacists while working in a government body.

Pharmacists for Special Forces is one of a less known way of being a pharmacist. Security forces such as Sri Lanka Army and Police services, specially recruit some selected number of pharmacists to cater their own pharmacological needs. Such pharmacists will select under the authorization of the health ministry and directly affiliated to the government training sector and finally let in to the army and police hospitals.

B.Sc. Pharmacology University Degree: The other way of being a pharmacist is to follow a university or a private institutional degree specialized for pharmacology, which even recognized as much as the other governmental ways. Almost all the medical faculties of the local universities provide pharmacology courses, as B.Sc pharmacology (Bachelor of Pharmacy degree). If you fulfill the basic requirements as a bio student with three passes in A/L are eligible for the course, where you can follow this degree for three academic years along with a recognized training period as well. These degree holders are also capable in researching pharmacology where they can draw new knowledge to the field of study. Apart from the professional aspects, these university courses have more outspread research aspects which motivate students in experimenting new pharmaceuticals etc.

Private Institutes that Conduct Pharmacology courses
Aquinas college Colombo; a leading private institution in Sri Lanka, provides some good pharmacy and pharmacology courses to the students through its Diploma in Pharmacy Management and Practice course. Students who have three passes in A/L bio stream are eligible for the study.

PATHE academy, offers a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Pharmacy which is said to be one of the precious gift to local students to get the pharmacology qualifications. School leavers who are looking to enter in to the medical professional sector, those working in a Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical related organization, any person in the Healthcare Service looking for career development are welcome to this diploma where it will provide the students a deep knowledge and a practice in following fields of study.

• Basic Pharmaceutical English Forensic
• Pharmacy Pharmaceutics
• Human Anatomy & Physiology
• Pharmacology Pharmacognocy
• Pharmaceutical Management Pharmaceutical Ethics
• Pharmaceutical Marketing Practical and Internship

Affiliated to reputed Indian universities PATHE will offer this diploma for a sum of 36,900 LKR for all two years of both academic and professional study. For pharmacology numerous foreign study opportunities are also available.

Therefore in studying and practicing pharmacology in Sri Lanka, you might consider these details and facts which we believe essential to you in choosing the correct path.

IEM- Institute of English Maharagama is also a reputed institute for English language learning. Dr. Kithsiri Jayasuriya as the founder and the present director of the institute has been introduced a monthly basis payment method to the students to overcome the bulk paying issue. Therefore students who study in IEM will get the prestige of attending classes without a pressure of a large sum of money. Though it is flexible in payments it has never being lost its reputation or the recognition among students. Grade parallel classes, English literature classes and diploma classes are available in IEM.

Apart from these pioneer institutions Susil Nanayakkara, Pujitha Wijesinghe, Noelin Hunter, Rathna Wijethunga, and many others are also conducting private institutions for learning English in Sri Lanka. Focusing mainly on spoken and the elocution paradigms of the language these institutions assist hundreds and thousands of students to improve their English. Home tuition, group tuition, night tuition, are some of the other minor but rather effective ways of learning English here.

Even though above all methods are said to be the best ways of learning English, there is one other way that you might use which will be the best and economic way of learning such language. Because it is a language, it has to be practiced by own. Therefore self learning is much essential even while studying at an institute. Reading English books, novels, newspapers, watching and listening to English news, watching English movies, following good speech accents, talk to friends and family and moreover being with the language is more worth.

Following table will overview some pioneering English learning institutes in Sri Lanka, their course details and costs which might help you in finding the best way for you.

In Sri Lanka there are many ways to get an IT degree. Best opportunities are ready to be provided by several national and international educational institutions around the country. In this post we suggest some of the degrees and such institutions that you might consider when selecting an IT degree.

The most economic way of doing an IT or computer science degree is to enter degree courses at a National University. UCSC (University of Colombo School of Computing) is the most popular option if you have obtained good Z score in local Advanced Level examination in physical science stream. University of Moratuwa has reputable computer engineering coursers for physical science students and even other students can enter their IT courses after an aptitude test. Other universities (Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya etc.) also have IT and computer science degrees.

However if you do not fulfill the entry requirements to above government universities, and still you keen studying IT as your tertiary education then you might turn yourself in to following private institutions.

SLIIT, NIBM, IIT, ICBT, ANU, RI, IDM, and APIIT are some of such major institutes which cater IT degrees to the local students. Most of them are affiliated with reputed foreign universities where you can get an internationally recognized degree locally. You can either follow the full degree locally or can go abroad for completion. However as they are private institutions you might also need to know whether they suit to your budget or not. Therefore their fees and course costs along with the degrees provided given below might led you to the correct choice.

SLIIT -
As most of these institutes are affiliated with foreign universities from countries mainly such as UK, USA and Australia, their fees and costs are bit higher when compared with other local courses. SLIIT (Sri Lanka Institute for Information Technology) cater B.Sc (Honors) four year degrees in IT for approximately 656,000 LKR, where you can either travel to the partner university for last two years or complete the whole degree locally. This cost will cover all tuition, examination, library and computer laboratory facilities etc. In this partnership program you might select the university Australian, Canadian or any other Pacific University or Edexel- collaborated UK University according to your choice. If you are satisfied with only two academic years then you can quit the SLIIT degree with a Higher National Diploma or National certificate from one year.

IDM – As SLIIT, IDM is also catering IT degrees directly collaborated with UK universities such as University of Greenwich, University of Wolverhampton, while conducting classes for the BIT external degree offered by University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Basically you have to pay nearly £1200 (2,14,000 LKR) for registration with the Partner University and then 173,000 LKR as the annual course fee. Most interestingly you will be able to pay the course fee in eleven installments, 12,750 LKR each, which can be considered as a simple plan to the student. IDM also a good place to study BCS, which is also considered a very good degree equivalent qualification.

APIIT – Installment payment facility is also available in APIIT, where you can pay each year course fee in either three installments or in 12 installments for the IT degrees you follow with them. APIIT provides good IT degrees in different fields such as Computing Science, Software Engineering awarded by Staffordshire University, United Kingdom, and you can easily get an internationally recognized UK degree at home for a reasonable prize. First two years of the degree APIIT charges a sum of 450,000 LKR for each year and 234,000 LKR for the last academic year. Additional costs such as 30,000 LKR of a registration fee and a library fee of 20,000 LKR will also need to be paid. However the academic standards might demonstrate the same as other reputed national and international universities where students can keep the faith on the money they spend.

NIBM -
NIBM provides a two year bachelors degree and a four year honors degree for IT, where students can study only locally yet the degree will be all the way from its Partner University; University College Dublin, Ireland. This is not a direct IT degree, but a B.Sc in Management Information Systems which will cost you 520,000 LKR (Course fee) + 2000 LKR (registration fee).

ANU -American National University
ANU is one of the international university bodies located locally to cater thousands of Sri Lankan students, while guiding them to a respectful USA IT degree. Typically following the American way ANU offers 3 semesters per one academic year, unlike in other local or internationally affiliated institutions based in the country. For first three years of study, students should pay approximately 646,000 LKR for each year and only 215,000 LKR for the final year.

There are many other institutions found, that offer IT / Computer degrees and diplomas around the country such as Royal Institute, Singapore Informatics and etc.

Moreover these above institutions does not limit to provide bachelor’s degrees, where they also cater good Master’s degrees, National Certificate courses, Higher National Diplomas and other short term courses as well.

Therefore we hope this post might lead you to a new dimension of IT studying in Sri Lanka.

We have compiled a table giving you summary of these IT degrees and tuition fees.

Australian government has decided to relax visa norms further, and now international students will have greater opportunity to work in the country and enjoy easier access to student visas.

Under the new regulation, international students who graduate from a bachelor or masters by coursework degree, and have studied for at least two years in Australia, will be able to remain in Australia and work (do a job) for two years after the completion of their course. Meanwhile, graduates of masters’ by research degree will have three years post-study work rights and PhD graduates will have four years post-study work rights.
These changes, which streamline visa access, will benefit students from many countries including Sri Lanka India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh and China.

This decision has taken to attract foreign students, as rising Australian dollar and global financial crisis have dealt a serious blow to the universities and vocational education colleges in the country as international students, including Sri Lanka.

In Sri Lanka there are only few ways to become a Chartered Architect. As many professions, architecture has its professional standards. University of Moratuwa and City School of Architecture are the only two possible ways to be an architect in Sri Lanka. After receiving the degree from any of above institutions, it is essential to acquire the Charter by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architecture to practice individually and perform institutionally.

University of Moratuwa provides the opportunity for over hundred students every year to follow the architecture courses; specializing architecture/ built environment or design. Students fulfill required academic qualifications in G.C.E.A/L exam, will be directed to a placement test and then selected for the course. Each student has to follow seven years of academic study consisted both Bachelors (B.Sc) and Master’s degrees (M.Sc). Then they have to consult the Sri Lanka Chartered Institute of Architecture (SLIA), for their charter where they have to spend nearly 30,000 LKR for completion. However they would be able to work under the supervision of any charted architect from their 3rd academic year in university and till they receive the charter or even after that. Most of the Sri Lankan architects who receive this particular efficacy are tend to work independently as they can perform their own creativity and the innovativeness.

Yet there are limited spaces provided from the government body for the architectural studies, some more positions are also available at City School of Architecture (CSA). Though it is a private institution the standards, and the responsibility are not have been declined and inevitably represents a higher national institutional body which empowers the country’s reputation. Same as in University of Moratuwa, students at CSA has to follow seven years of full time education in completion degree requirements. Similar assessment methods and training possibilities are also available as found in the university. After seven years of academic education at CSA the students may eligible to follow the chartered examination for architects which might allow them to practice on their own.

Both institutions have theoretical and practical aspects where students could either select their carrier as a professional architect or as an academic who explore the theories behind the bricks.

University of Moratuwa also provides M.phill and Ph.D degrees for students and charted architects who wish to follow their higher studies in Sri Lanka, thus CSA offers some higher national and advanced certificate diplomas in architecture.
