Update 2012; BIT application details for 2012 Intake (Deadline 30 June 2012)

BIT (Bachelor of Information Technology) is a Three Year external degree programme conducted by UCSC (University of Colombo School of Computing) since October 2000. BIT provides opportunities for people looking for a career in IT/ Computer Science. Over the Years due to its high Industry relevance BIT offered by UCSC has become the most popular IT External Degree offered by a state university.

Academic year begins in October. Deadline for the Next intake is for 30 September 2011.

Entry Qualifications:

Students that complete their A/L Examinations with 3 passes in any stream can gain entry into the programme directly. If the student does not have A/L passes or has not done A/Ls, the student can first enter into the Foundation in Information Technology (FIT) programme and then proceed onto the BIT Degree. Students with other qualifications can also be selected into the programme by sitting for an e-Selection test to check their aptitude.

Structure of the Program:
Students that complete the 1st year (Semesters 1 & 2) will be awarded with the UCSC Diploma in IT, and then proceed onto the 2nd year (Semesters 3 & 4). Successful completion of this stage entitles you to the UCSC Higher Diploma in IT, making you eligible to progress to the final 3rd year (Semesters 5 & 6) which will award you with the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) Degree.

According to BIT web site, Course fee for the degree (all three years) is around SLR 45,000 (2001, Sept). The University of Colombo will award the degree.

Tuition Providers:
However you have to attend classes to gain knowledge to sit for these exams. Classes are conducted by IDM, OpenArc, ESOFT, MATRIX, Path Academy and many other places. Before selecting a place, look for the past results, lecturing staff, course materials, Classrooms and laboratory facilities in these places.

You can follow BIT as a part time while doing a job. If you want to concentrate on BIT as full time then you can also learn other skill areas and follow IT courses including web designing, programming, networking, vendor certifications from Microsoft, Sun, and Cisco and hardware courses.

    Is it possible to do BIT while I am enrolled to a other undergraduate programme in a government University (Eg:- Biological science, physical science, agriculture …etc)

    Taking BIT is not affect for any other degrees offer from government institutes/universities.

    Taking BIT and entrance/reading other government degrees are independent.

    Dear sir ,
    Please let me know it it is possible to do BIT while you are enrolled to some other undergraduate programme in a gov. university
    (ie Biological science, physical science, agriculture …etc)

    Dear sir.
    I would like to know if a student enrolls in BIT ,does it affect his/her university entrance on some other undergraduate programme? (ie-Medicine ,Engineering,Biological science etc..)
    or are they allowed to continue BIT while studying such undergraduate programmes?

      If you do not have A/L then first you have to do FIT and then register for BIT.
