Anyone should have a basic and general knowledge about the IT and after A/Ls anyone can complete a short term course in IT and get a general knowledge.
And if you wish to become an IT professional (Computing Professions, Software Engineer,Systems Engineer, Software QA Engineer, Networks Administrator, IT Manager, or UI Engineer) you should follow a proper Diploma, Degree level or any other professional course. And for further knowledge and in the job hunting process a professional course in a specific technology will be a very good contribution.
This presentation gives details on Degree Programs, Diploma Programs, Certificate courses and Professional Certifications available in Sri Lanka and abroad.
Details on Computer science courses at National Universities, SLIIT, NIBM, APIIT (Asia Pacific Institute of IT), IIT (Informatics Institute of Technology), BIT conducted by University of Colombo (UCSC) and professional certificate courses such as CISCO Certifications, Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP), MCSE – Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, MCSD – Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer, RHCT – Redhat Certified Linux Technician and RHCE – Redhat Certified Linux Engineer are discussed in this presentation.

@Kavindu
Well, ummm.., theoritically yes you dont need to have any prior knowledge for thses as I have heared a school student in grade 8, and an adult in 75 years of age has got thrugh the SCJP exams
so I dont think that will be a hard thing to pass the exam after doing some exam practice.
But when it comes to your view, indeed, you should be an expert in the field what you studying in that case, if you wanna be a network expert, I recommend you to do some self study on networking, some basic theories like TCP/IP, Network topologies etc., Don’t worry if you dont understan those stuff, but just read.
Then you can start your CCNA, actually CCNA has 2 Modules called ICND1 and ICND2 (Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices) but, for a beginner it is recommend to follow another module called CCENT (Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician) In the CCENT and ICND1 modules you will learn get the background knowledge and the actual cisco stuff starts from ICND2 .
Cisco and Microsoft are only 2 product venders and you cant be an expert in networking after having CCNA or MCSE certificates, but you need to practice and use your knowledge in a real world networking environment.
I believ, by the time you finish your CCNA and (at least) MCP you will be get a chance to work in a small netowrk ot at least you can setup your own CISCO network at your home.
Please feel free to post more questions if you have.
Thank you and wishing you a Good Luck
Anuradha
@Samanthi

@Deepal
You always welcome and you can post any further queries if you have any doubt. Also its a really good news to hear you have decided to follow some professional certifications along with BIT degree, as I told you it will be nice to follow the Java (SCJP) within the 1st year of BIT. I’m sure that will possitively feed back to each other.
Good luck with your studies
Anuradha

Do you need any pre qualifications to do those professional courses (such as CISCo Microsoft ones etc.)
If you can do these direct, then, can we become an expert on a particular area without IT degree?
Great presenation. loads of info.
Thanks Anuradha ayya for your wonderful presentation yesterday at studentlanka seminar. Lots of our myths on IT field was solved. I am doing BIT by UCSC and after your talk, I decided to do some professional qulification course also.
