Cost of Private degree courses vary as can be seen for the cost of various IT degrees. Higher Education Minister Hon S.B. Dissanayake told Parliament yesterday (6 July 2010) that cost per student in each undergraduate degree course of study was Rs 555,653 for Dental Science, Rs 463,476 for veterinary science, Rs 286,592 for medicine, Rs 263,321 for agriculture, Rs 180,845 for science, Rs 173,704 for engineering, Rs 123,813 for architecture, Rs 111,893 for education, Rs 109,135 for Business studies and Rs 57,767 for law per student of the Buddhashravaka Bhiksu University and Rs 241,517 per student of Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.

He also said that there are around 73 private educational institutes offering degree courses in the country. The Minister said there are eight institutes which have been recognized under Section 25 A of the University Act to amend some selected degree programs.

Comparing these costs, it seems that cost of degrees offered by private degree awarding institutes are higher compared to actual cost per student of state universities. According to the web sites of those institutes, approximate tuition fees claimed to be charged by different institutes are about Rs 448,000 for BSc in Information Technology (BIT) of SLIIT, Rs 480,000 for BSc in Management Information Systems degree of NIBM (conducted in collaboration with University College, Dublin), Rs 380,000 for UGC approved BSc degree in Management Information Systems – Special Degree at NIBM. Private institutes who affiliate with foreign universities charge much higher prices.

Please add your comments on the approximate cost of different private degrees in Sri Lnaka.

I wanted to do private degree. but costs are very high, and we do not know the quality of education they give. No authority in SL to verify the quality of education these private institutes provide.

How are the fees at Law College? If you manage to pass the entrance that is? Do you get a scholarship if you are among those who achieved the best results?

@Nibras. Thank for mentioning IChem degree. We have post on this course http://studentlanka.com/2009/12/31/graduate-ship-private-degree-program-in-chemistry-for-students-after-al-in-sri-lanka/

And, you forgot Institute of Chemistry. Am first year student there.

IChemC, CCS offers Graduate Chemist course which is recognized as equivalent to a BSc(Hons) Chemistry in most countries. It has more recognition than a government university degree in the industry.

Overall cost is around Rs.300000-400000 when paid in installments. When the whole fee is paid upfront, you get discounts which puts the overall cost around Rs. 200000.

Wonderful opportunity with some of the best lecturers in sri lanka.

    Hmm.

I think the local universities should start offerring extra paid placements and seats.

Many of us in Colombo spend lots of money in tuition classes alone to do well in ALs and get a place in one of these government universities.

An average student attends 1-2 classes per subject and each class charge on average 800-1000Rs. Altogether we spend around 20000 for the two-three years in ALs let alone classes for repeaters. The government has a very good opportunity to take in more students at a lower cost than private sector and increase the overall graduate output.

If the government is scared of any difference between those who pay fee and those who don’t, they can charge an overall low fee after increasing the capacity or they can start offering need based scholarships.

What do I say? This article just stunted me. We are being losers in this modern world. Sri lankans are known to be the smartest in the world, the government is doing a big mistake by not offering this low cost education!!!

I visited Edex and Future Minds 2010 Educational Exhibitions in Sri Lanka and asked about courses. Many sales people did not said actual prices of degree programs, and asked me to come to the office for details. But cost were SLIIT 69000 + US $ 300 per semester for foreign degree, APIIT 24,000 per month, 80 laks if you want to do an engineering degree in Malaysia.
45 laks plus for Sri Lankan Private medical college.
Cheapest affordable one was BIT with IDM classes, but course completion of these external degrees are very low.
