Advice for selecting engineering and physical science courses at National Universities according to UGC book

Feb 16, 2010 17 Comments by KalanaTennakoon

Many students get confused in marking their preferences in filling the UGC form to enter into a national university in Sri Lanka. This provides some advice based on a document issued to students by popular A/L Combined Mathematics Teacher Mr. Praja Renuka.

In the UGC form, you have to select the course preference order and preferred universities for each course. If you have a good Z-score then you can enter Engineering Faculty, else you have to select other physical science courses.

Engineering Courses –

For example if a student wishes to apply for Engineering he should mark preferences as follows.

Course Code – University Code

08 (Engineering) – G (Moratuwa) B (Peradeniya) F (Ruhuna)

The same course may be available in different universities. You need a higher Z-score to enter most demanding university, and other universities require comparatively low Z-score. Therefore you should first mark reputed or well established universities. Moratuwa is considered to be the best university for Engineering studies in Sri Lanka.

If a student does not poses a adequate Z-Score for Engineering and wants to follow Quantity Surveying still he should mark Engineering as his first preference. The logic is if by chance a vacancy created he will be enrolled for the first preferred courses. Eg:
Course Code – University Code

08 (Engineering) – G(Moratuwa) B(Peradeniya) F(Ruhuna)

11 (Qty Surveying)* – G(Moratuwa)**

* This course requires at least Credit passes for English, Mathematics and Science in O/L

** This course only available at Moratuwa University in Sri Lanka.

If you obtained a lower Z-Score, still you should mark better courses first and then the other course. This will open chances to enter a good course if vacancies open for these courses. Here we have provided a suggested preference list for students.  However you can make your own preferences by omitting some of these courses.

08 (Engineering)  – G(Moratuwa) B(Peradeniya) F(Ruhuna)

75(Industrial Informatio0n technology)*   –   U(Uwa Wellassa)

64(Science &Tech)*  –   U(Uwa Wellassa)

76(Mineral Resource & tech)*  –    U(Uwa Wellassa)

25(Law)*     –   A(Colombo) B(Peradeniya)
* These courses require Credit passes for subjects such as Maths and English at O/L examination. Some courses select students after holding an aptitude test. For further details please refer Admission to undergraduate courses of the universities in Sri Lanka – Academic Year 2009 – 2010 – Based on GCE A/L Examination 2009

Although the newly established offer attractive courses there is less demand compared to other courses. This may be due to lack of experienced and professionally qualified staff. Within few years they will also turned out to be well demanded university courses in Sri Lanka. However if you are good at particular area such as IT you can directly mark your preferences without marking all other courses. The risk in this approach is if you are not selected for the particular course you will lose other chances as you have not marked these in the preference list. UGC will consider your preferences according to priority list and will give you the highest eligible course.

  4. Senaka Maxa says:

Moratuwa has been the no 1 eng univ in SL. However now courses in Moratuwa are more like management rather than real hard core engineering. However Peradeniya still maintains good engineering education.

  5. Hiran says:

For A/L ICT tuition contact Sanath Gamlath @ Rotary Hall, Nugegoda. 072 6323116

Engineering Faculty of University of Ruhuna is stepping towards its 10th Anniversary in March 23rd, 2010. So as the youngest and most dynamic faculty in Sri Lanka, it’s high time to show the talents and achievements of the graduates and under graduates of the faculty, to the country with large interactive Engineering Exhibition.

  8. Kalana Tennakoon says:

    Hans,
Yea there are only few English medium tuition classes for external degrees. Contact JMC Kandy and see.080-0072880, 0805-629760-5. Otherwise you may have to come colombo for classes. The main disadvantage of selecting an external degree in Newly Established University is this.

    Dear Friends,

All the degrees conducted by Rajarata University are job oriented. As a newly added university to the national university system(just 10 years old), it has introduced lot of degrees related to industrial fields..

The followings are the degrees conducted by Faculty of Applied Sciences
    * B.Sc. (General) 3 year degree in Applied Sciences
    * B.Sc. 4 year degree in Applied Sciences
    * B.Sc. 4 year degree in Industrial Mathematics
    * B.Sc. (Special) 4 year degree in Applied Biology
    * B.Sc. 4 year degree in Health Promotion
    * B.Sc. 4 year degree in Information & Communication Technology(ICT)
    * B.Sc. (Joint Major) 4 year degree in Biology & Physics

Don’t make any hesitation to join for this university.. I must say that the decision to enter this national university, would be very effective for your future career.
