Graduate-ship private degree program in Chemistry for students after A/L in Sri Lanka
Student asked me yesterday, that she has only one B and two C passes for GCE A/L examination, so that she may not be selected to a government university in Sri Lanka. So what are the options for her to follow private higher degree program in Sri Lanka. Various higher education and career options for students after advanced level examination are listed on this web site.
One option is to follow a degree in Chemistry offered by College of Chemical Sciences, affiliated to Institute of Chemistry, Sri Lanka, which maintains high degree of academic standards as the lectures are conducted by university senior lecturers and professors in Chemistry.
This is a three year program, normally started in January- February each year, after GCE Advanced Level results are released. This degree is equivalent to BSc degree in Chemistry, so after graduation you can follow post-graduate program in Chemistry in Sri Lanka or abroad. According to their news paper advertisement, 91 qualified Chemical Science graduates passed out from the college in 2009. Eligibility to enter this course is 3 A/L passes or equivalent. Please contact College of Chemical Sciences, Adamantane House, 341/22, Kotte Road, Welkada, Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka for details.

Hi I want to Know what are the JOb opportunities THat we can achieve Fallowing These I chem Courses … And Is it Possible to Fallow A I chem Course for university student…
Nilanthi – I Chem graduateship equals to chemistry special. There are university students who follow I Chem also.
im a student at univercity of pera ,faculty of science.I would like to do my carrier in chemistry. But i dont know whether i can do a special. Is there any options

Hi am fathima from kandy, I’ve done my A’ls in 2010, and now am searching a sector to start my higher studies. As fellows can you all give me any suggestions?
Mail me to sfnsiddeeq@gmail.com
I currently complete the first year and am in second year now. This is a pretty good choice for those who want to study in Sri Lanka for a BSc(Hons) in Chemistry.
Right now, a research component is also offered in the final year.
The overall cost can be 300000-400000 depending on how you pay. You get a discount if you pay the full fee in advance. There are also 12 scholarships available. Eligibility is determined by an exam.
As compared to national universities, I must admit that IChemC is still a professional body and offering professional qualifications. It’s not a real university and so you’d be missing on the inter-faculty experiences and a huge student body. However, the student body is extremely friendly and welcoming. And, almost all national festivals are celebrated. There’s no ragging in here unlike in most government universities.
In terms of quality of education, it’s in par with University of Colombo or University of Jayawardenepura or any national university in western province and in some aspects even better. The lecture panel consists mainly of visiting lectures from government universities.
Almost all the lecturers are PhD qualified including even the introductory language course lecturers.
All lectures are conducted in English. The course content is also excellent.
course is so difficult. u want to work very hard.otherwise u can’t get a 1st class . but the recognition is very higher than universities.so this is one of the best course in Sri Lanka. Finally i strongly recommend to follow IChem and this professional course hv very good course content.
pls do not do this course.course is so difficult but recognition is less.think before do this.
I also agree, only a few find jobs suitable for the time + money spent. I also had a hard time as I had to do this course while working so only got a second lower. If you study without doing anything else like some people who have posted here you can do well but at the end of th day its all about rote learning. In terms of lectureres, its second to none but in terms of instruments, it used secondary school stuff till recently.
My sister graduate from ICHEM and she had a hard time finding a job too.
But now she is working.
Irony is though some are not willing to “even compare” ICHEM with Pera & Colombo Uni degrees it is acceptable to study for the MSc. offered by SL universities.
I have completed both I.Chem & Chemistry special degree in university of Peradeniya. I feel, No need to compare our University special degree and Ichem degree. Due to lack of university facilities, only few students (may be 15% out of all A/L students) gained admission to local universities. The remaining 85% of students had to seek an
alternative to continue their higher studies. The majority of these students generally go with professional courses such as CIMA, SLIT, and CIM etc. Ichem is another professional course for chemistry. Those who cannot enter Uni. (85%) have also same knowledge as students who enter uni. The problem is very few facilities in our Uni.s. Our political jokers do corruption instead of developing those facilities. Moreover, SL University chemistry special degree is in # 01 in the world when i compare with USA undergraduate level labs and classes.
Therefore no need to compare IChem with SL uni Chem special degree. Specially, I had industrial training and undergrad research program in my 4th year at Pera uni., Those are not in IChem degree. Still IChem is a very good professional course for chemistry. I strongly recommend to follow this professional course.
And the life style in my uni.(peradeniya) was excellent..I can not compare with any other thing. I have never seen such kind of natural beauty in an university. Hostel life also incredible.
Please don’t compare Ichem with Uni. special degree. Still our SL education system is in #1 in the world. stupid political jokers corrupt everything.
Finally, again i strongly recommend to follow IChem and this professional course has a very good standard course content.
from Eranda (currently i am waiting to get my PhD in USA)
Can you compaire the quality of IChem degree with Peradeniya or Colombo Chemistry Special degree? I think this is a serious issue when students apply for graduate program or jobs. So far IChem didnt have research,or seminar components like in the Special degree. And they claim that this is equallent to Chemistry Special degree. Before special selections University students study 3 subjects (like Physics,Biology,Molecular Biology,Geology,Mathematics,Statistics,Computer Science etc etc) for two years. Also study minor subjects like Management, Economics, Electronics, Science Education, Astronomy etc…I think we cannot even compaire IChem with Peradeniya or Colombo general degree. I have worked with IChem 1st class graduates and I know very well about their knowledge.
Examination system in IChem is not that good. For example in Peradeniya special degree, if you don’t pass Quantum Mechanics or Statistical Thermodynamics you can’t even get the degree. Those are 1 credit compulsory courses in that syllabus. But in IChem, those are just a part of a question in physical chemistry paper. Students can simply ommit them and get A pass.
University Lecturers can earn extra pocket money from IChem, so no one will argue about this issue.
HI
I am a product of I.Chem. I graduated in 1998 with Third Class (honours)
Please think about the following before selecting this course.
1. Unless you obtain a first class or second upper, the job opportunities are extremely rare, especially if you are a girl.
2. Employers will most of the time prefer ‘experience’ in the field, which you do not get by followoing I.Chem Course. I.Chem degree has no research project in the final year like in University, special degree programmes, though they claim to be Institute of Chemistry Degree is equivalent to a Chemistry Special!
3. Institute of Chemistry Degree is not recognized by the Government sector as a Degree offered by a recognized university. So if you miss the private sector, you won’t be eligible to apply for the government sector jobs, where the degree is considered as the minimum qualification.
So why invest your valuable time and money in critical theories and hours of practicals, if all what you want is a decent job? I tried hard to get a job in the field of chemistry for years and now I have given up. Don’t follow this course unless you are crazy in Chemistry!
Hi all,
I have just joined this program.
They said the classed will start from February 6th.
If anybody else is also joining, feel free to add me on my facebook.(Link on my name)
Hi All,
I am a product of the I. Chem. C. of the year 1997. At that time, I. Chem C. was not very famous, and conducted the classes and labs at the New Science Building at St. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia.
I obtained a second upper from I. Chem. C. Becoming the Batch top at the Part I and Batch Second at the Part II. It was my life changing moment, and later I joined to Unilever as a Chemist. After working at Unilever, I migrated to USA for my MS in chemistry. I obtained MS in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and enrolled for Ph.D at the University of Delaware. Today, I submitted my Ph.D. Thesis to the committee, and I will be defending my dissertation on the 12th.
If it was not I. Chem. C. I wouldn’t be in this place,.. With our initiative, a lot of students follow their Ph.D’s in UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Europe.
Now, with an extensive network, most of the students pass out from the I. Chem. C. with first or second class upper degree pursue Ph.D.’s or MSc’s in different countries. For some, not as fortunate as us, follow MSc. Degrees in Sri Lanka as well.
So, there are plenty of opportunities if you can follow I. Chem. C. degree program and get through with it. The life in I. Chem C. is interesting, and it has typical University environment with a lot of facilities, but no Strikes or fights,.. Everyone live in a very good harmony, Instead of ragging, we welcome our juniors with a grand welcome party at a hotel or a reception hall.
Currently passing out batch has 92 graduates, and out of them 53 are first time students, and others are repeating students. The beauty of I. Chem. C. Degree is, you can follow it even if you are working in the week days, Or even if you follow a University degree at the same time.
It changed my life, and many more… There are already over 25 Ph.D. holders produced from the I. Chem. C., and many more are following the path of their seniors. It’s an internationally recognized UGC accredited degree, so that you can enroll to any other university with good qualifications from I. Chem. C.
As seniors, we guide and help our juniors to find good universities and make their lives successful.
Getting I chem degree is better in some ways to open university, because I Chem can be finished quickely and you get lectures not the distance learning.
