Read good books to transform your life
In this era, knowledge is the power. You may be an expert on some subject area and may have read books in your specialized area. However to get an overall picture of what is happening in this rapidly changing world it is important to read books out of your subject area.
In Sri Lanka, there are many books on positive thinking published by Sri Lankan authors such as Daya Rohana Athukorala, Gamini Kumara Withana, Sumanadasa Samarasinghe, Nalaka Hewamadduma, Leelananda Gamachchi, Lal Fonseka, Deepal Sooriyarachchi, Prianga de Soyza and Sarath Wijesooriya. Most of them are translated to Sinhala from English books, and some of them are original books.
If you are interested in school text books then read other articles on this web site: Chemistry Text Books, Biology Text Books, Physics Text Books and Download free text books. You can buy many of these books from leading books stores in Sri Lanka, but another good way is to go to Colombo International Book fair held annually at BMICH, Colombo.
There are many great books written by influential writers in countries such as USA and UK; some of these books have changed the way people behave and take decisions.
These are some of my book recommendations for those who like to know about trends and ideas in the changing world. Some of these books such as Blink, Tipping point can be purchased in Sri Lankan bookstores, however other you may have to order online from the company such as www.amazon.com. Just click the book icon and you will be taken to Amazon book store. I have ordered several books form them, though their postage is expensive, the service is excellent, you can read reviews by several users of the books, which makes the selecting books easier.

Everybody should read outside the school curriculum. The Sri Lankan education system is so formal and non-flexible, that it does not encourage lateral thinking or “real life practical” skills. I sat for my A/Ls in 1999, and one of the biggest regrets I have now is not reading enough during those school years. I am now in a position in life to appreciate how reading outside your subject or area of expertise can complement and improve performance in your work life. However, buying books from amazon.com is quite expensive. There are many sources on the internet which offer free downloading of books.
http://www.gutenberg.org
Project Guttenberg has a large collection of copyright-free e-books for you to download. Top titles include The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci by Leonardo da Vinci, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli, Dracula by Bram Stoker and War and Peace by graf Leo Tolstoy. It has various version avalaibale for downloading, including a Plucker version for PDAs and smartphones.
http://books.google.com
Google books is another fantastic source of free material, which makes searching for book easier and faster (in true Google style!). If the authors have given permission or the copyright has expired you can search the full text and sometimes, even download a pdf copy (for use with the free Adobe Acrobat reader). Google have even made it easy to find relevant information, read reviews, find related books and articles, and buy the book.

If you read a book that you really like, visit the above site and type in the details. It usually comes up with useful suggestions of what other books you might enjoy. Registering and adding books on to your favourite lists improves the accuracy of the suggestions. Try out their (beta) website for music and DVDs (http://www.thisonenext.com/search).
Enjoy!
