i want to follow molecular biology course.i have the a/l results to do that.how many years the course stands?i’m selected for medicine too.but i dont like it.what are the benifits doing this course?

  14. Hiran on July 9, 2009 at 10:27 pm

Molecular Biology in Univ of Colombo is four year course. University of Sri Jayewardenepura also has biotechnology course and other universities also have microbiology and genetics courses.
Medicine over Molecular Biology? that you have to decide. There are pros and cons of selecting biotech over medicine. Perhaps other readers of this who follow these courses may post their ideas on this issue.

I live in the UK and have a whole list of questions that I would really appreciate some help with about the Sri Lankan further education system! Can anyone kindly give me some answers….

    1. Please could someone let me know whether there are some degree courses taught in English in Sri Lanka and also how long they normally take to complete? (Three or four years is standard in the UK).

    2. Are applications to Sri Lankan universities accepted all year round or are there strict guidelines as to when you can apply for courses?

    3. Does anyone have any idea of an estimated budget for students in Sri Lanka for the time they are on a degree course?

    4. Is there a fee for international students?

    5. Are there any scholarship schemes in Sri Lanka? Any weblinks would be very helpful.

    6. Are there any internationally-recognised qualifications that can be gained in Sri Lanka? Particularly ones recognised in the UK. Any weblinks gratefully received.

    7. Does anyone know of any particular professions that are suffering from a shortage in qualified employees at the moment?

    8. Are there any industries in decline?

    9. Which are the main big employers in Sri Lanka?

    10. How do visa restrictions effect how long you can stay in the country?

    11. What constitutes a good CV in Sri Lanka – how long should it be? Do you include a photo.
(In the UK, no more than 2 pages is considered the norm. Photos optional).

    12. Is it acceptable to send a CV out to a company in Sri Lanka without knowing if they have any vacancies?

    13. Does anyone know what opportunities exist for educational posts? Are there lots of them??

    14. Are interviews for jobs carried out infront of a panel of people? Do you usually need to do any written or verbal tests?

    15. Are networking events in Sri Lanka common?

    16. Is there much oppotunity for casual work in Sri Lanka?

    17. What is the Special Degree Exam? Can UK students take it?

    18. Finally, what about student visas? How long do they last, are they easy to get?

Any information gratefully received. Many thanks

  24. Hiran on October 19, 2009 at 10:15 pm

Angela, Its a long list of questions. I’ll answer some for the time being.
    1. Whether there are some degree courses taught in English
Yes many medical, engineering and science courses are taught in English.

In Sri Lanka and also how long they normally take to complete?
There are Three or four years degrees (as in the UK).

    2. Guidelines as to when you can apply for courses?
Sri Lankan state universities provide free education to Sri Lankans. Hence students are selected repetitively based on GCE advanced level examination held annually in August. There are no local private universities. But there are institutes offer diplomas, and some offer foreign degrees.

  25. Angela Singleton on October 20, 2009 at 2:15 am

Thanks for taking the time to answer those questions, Hiran.

So, am I right in thinking that a British student in Sri Lanka is more likely to study at an institute for a degree course than at a state university?

  26. Janani on November 1, 2009 at 8:10 am

Could you tell me whether a degree from Acquinas University College is internationally-recognised Particularly in the UK if applied for a MSc.
